Eric Wilkes
Photographer and Scientist
Or is it scientist and photographer. I suppose since this is my photography website the first is more appropriate, but I do think both are integral to who I am. My day job is as a scientist in the wine industry (yeah, a tough job but someone has to do it, right?) which is a career I sought of fell into in the late 90’s. But I do truly love working on the technical side of such a creative and fun industry.
Photography has been one of my passions for much longer, I first picked up an SLR camera when I was 15 (I think) at high school when I chose photography as an elective subject for 2 hours a week for a term. From that point onwards I was hooked by the medium and have used it as an emotional outlet, with the occasional hiatus as life got in the way, ever since. Other than that initial course which lasted perhaps 10 weeks I have never done any formal training in photography. I just love discovering what you can do and use it as a way to discover the world around me and perhaps show others how I see that world.
I live in Adelaide, South Australia, where a very large part of the Australian Wine industry is based. My home is within sight of the ocean and many of my images are taken 10 minutes walk from my front door. I also get to travel to many amazing places for work and usually find room to have a camera in my luggage.
Yes I do photography commercially as well, occasional event photography, pictures for books and commercial shots for winemaking friends when asked (bottle shots can be surprisingly fun if the client is willing to live a little). If any of images appeal prints are available at very reasonable prices. For specific work or to commission an event or project just contact me by email.
If you have any questions about who I am, what I do or just want to know something in general, please drop me a line. You may not get the answer you were after, but you will get an answer.
